Somos Un Pueblo Unido is a local and statewide organization that has been working in New Mexico for over 20 years. It is community based, immigrant led, and works on issues of immigrant worker’s rights and racial justice. They have worked to ensure that Immigrants can get Drivers’ Licenses, are paid a fair wage, and receive the wages that are owed to them. Most recently they have focused on defending sanctuary policies and countering the detention and deportation efforts in our new political climate. On Saturday April 1st, Harry’s Roadhouse will participate in a fundraiser for Somos Unido. Starting next week, from March 26th through April 4th, 13 conscientious restaurants from around town are donating to Somos and helping to publicize this wonderful organization and to highlight the important work that they do in our community. We formed a bond with Somos and have supported them for many years. When our employees have turned to Somos with issues, they have received excellent advice.
We could not run the Roadhouse as we do without immigrants. Often, when we run ads, immigrants are the only people who apply. We see how many struggle, working two or three jobs. We witness how much they value their families, both here and in their countries of origin. Many of our immigrant families have children who have graduated from high school and are now enrolled in college. One has a son on the fast track to go to Medical School. This is the American Dream come true. One of the things that we so much enjoy about the restaurant is the mosaic of people who we work with and serve; immigrants and native born, rich and poor, people of all faiths, beliefs and all ethnic backgrounds. Since we came to Santa Fe as outsiders twenty-five years ago, we have come to love this city and region, and so many of the dedicated organizations that serve the community.
We want to thank Somos for the important work they do in New Mexico. To find out more about the work Somos does, call them at 505-424-7832.
